National Day of Remembrance for Victims of Honour Based Violence Sunday 14th July 2019

Shafelia Ahmed

14th July 1986 – 11th September 2003

In Memory of Shafilea and all Victims of Honour Based Violence

Sunday 14th July 2019 marks the fifth national day of remembrance for victims of so-called honour based violence. Shafilea was murdered in 2003 by her parents in an honour based killing; she would have turned 33 this year. Shafelia’s birthday was chosen as a date of annual remembrance for all people subjected to honour based violence.

Honour based violence is any violence or abuse which may have been committed to protect or defend the honour of the family or community including forced marriage, female genital mutilation (FGM) and honour killings.  Honour based violence cuts across all cultures, nationalities and includes male as well as female victims.  The school summer holidays are a time of particular risk for honour based violence crimes with many young people during the period travelling overseas to visit family.

Supported by the government’s ‘Building a Stronger Britain Together’ programme, a community roadshow aimed at professionals, community groups, leaders and community members interested in increasing awareness and confidence in identifying Honour Based Violence will be held at Number One Riverside, Rochdale on 27th September 2019.
